The Delhi Cabinet chaired by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal approved a proposal to increase the stipend of Anganwadi workers and helpers by almost 100% in July. The stipend has been increased from Rs 5,000 per month to Rs 9,678 per month. The cabinet also approved enhancement of the honorarium of Anganwadi helpers from Rs 2,500 per month to Rs 4,839 per month.
Anganwadi centers were created in 1975 as part of the Integrated Child Development Services program. This stipend increase will act as a catalyst to bolster the services given by Anganwadi workers and increase motivation. The aim is a more suitable stipend for those working with children aged 0-6 and lactating mothers.
Additionally, the Delhi government has decided to pay Rs 500 and Rs 250 per month as mobile/internet charges in addition to this stipend increase. The decision will likely benefit approximately 12,000 Anganwadi workers.
